This past weekend, Riverside sent four Cyclones to compete in the 321A State Tournament in Hays, Kansas. On Friday morning, Bayleigh Cooper (115), Micah Robidou (132), Aurora Gray (155), and Noah Wooley (285) all faced first-round losses and found themselves on the backside of the brackets.
In the second round, Cooper and Robidou secured their spots for the second day of competition by receiving a bye and a medical forfeit, respectively. Gray and Wooley both wrestled tough matches but couldn’t pull off the wins, ultimately ending their seasons on Friday.
Saturday morning, Bayleigh Cooper had a rematch with Rowan Day of Mound City-Jayhawk Linn. This match was a repeat of the regional tournament’s third-place match, where Day had pinned Cooper in the second period. However, Cooper came out strong and pinned Day in the final seconds of the first period, avenging her earlier loss.
Micah Robidou faced Tanner Loughrie from Haven High School in his match. In a high-paced bout, Robidou was caught in a bad position and was pinned in the second period.
In the consolation quarterfinals, Cooper found herself one win away from making the podium. She was matched up against Jordan Hency from Humboldt, Kansas, a wrestler whom Cooper had defeated twice earlier in the season. Early in the match, Cooper was put on her back but quickly regained control, dominating the rest of the match. She pinned Hency while leading 10-2, securing a spot on the podium as one of the top six wrestlers in the state.
After two more tough matches, Bayleigh Cooper placed sixth, concluding her season with a 30-11 record. Cooper started wrestling her sophomore year during Riverside's inaugural season for girls wrestling. That season, she went 0-15. Two years later, she became Riverside's first female state qualifier and the school’s first female state medalist.
